Sharing is caring!

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Everyone always says, homemade is better well you are going to love to learn how to make vanilla extract. With just these two simple ingredients and some patience you will have the best vanilla extract just in time for baking season! I was at my local craft store, and they already have Christmas decorations out, crazy to think about it when it’s so hot outside. But hey Christmas in July is a thing so its normal to start thinking about some little gifts for people. This homemade vanilla extract will make a great Christmas gift for your friends or family.

Why homemade?

Not only does homemade vanilla extract give a stronger flavor it’s a lot better for you. Most store-bought vanilla extract is actually imitation vanilla and loaded with added sugar. Whereas homemade pure vanilla extract has no additives, will last forever, continue aging and give off amazing flavors. With just two ingredients organic vanilla beans and vodka.

How to make vanilla extract

I’ll be honest making this at home is very simple you only need two ingredients vanilla beans and vodka. I was able to get the organic whole grade B vanilla beans on amazon (see link below).

Step 1

Make sure to clean all glass bottle and let dry before making vanilla extract.

Step 2

You are going to want to open your vanilla bean. By using a sharp knife split the vanilla bean down the middle, it doesn’t have to be all the way, just enough to open the bean. Depending on the size of the bottle you use to make this extract you might have to cut your beans in half to fit. Add 5-10 vanilla beans to the jar or glass bottle.

Step 3

You can now pour the vodka into the bottles. You can either use 8oz of vodka or enough to submerge the vanilla beans.

Step 4

Now we wait. You are going to want to store your vanilla extract in the cupboard or make sure it’s out of direct sunlight. Be sure to shake the bottles once every week or two weeks. I highly suggest you store this in a place you see often so you don’t forget about them.

Step 5

Once it’s been at least 3 months you can start using your vanilla extract. For optimal flavor wait 6-12 months for the best, stronger vanilla extract flavor.

Fun Facts

  • Did you know after you use your vanilla extract you can refill it with vodka. If you do so, make sure you give the bottle a shake once you refill and again before using.
  • If vanilla beans are exposed above the alcohol level for too long without being submerged, they can become slimy. I suggest removing the beans from the bottle if you’re going to gift them, so your friends or family don’t have to remember to refill the bottle.
  • Don’t forget to reuse your beans. If you gift or your extract has been sitting for over 6 months, remove the beans out and start a new batch. Continue the new batch the same way you started.

Common questions

How long should I let my vanilla extract sit?

You should let your vanilla extract sit for at least 3 months. It is safe to use after the 3 months but for optimal flavors its best to wait 6-12 months before using.

Is homemade vanilla extract cost effective?

Yes, like everything else in the world vanilla extract is getting pretty pricey. Most vanilla extract is going for $5 per 2-4 oz bottle and can range all the way up to $13 as well. Though the price can vary depending on where you live and the quality of the extract you are buying.

How long can I store the vanilla extract?

Make sure the beans a fully submerged, if so, they can last in a cool dry space for years. To make it easier after the vanilla extract has sit for 6-12 months take the beans out so you don’t have to worry about them getting slimy being out of the alcohol. Then your vanilla extract will last indefinitely.

What is the best alcohol for vanilla extract?

Vodka will give you the smoothest, purest and well-balanced vanilla flavor. But you can also use bourbon which will give you a smooth, warm extract with some caramel undertones.

What is the shelf life of vanilla beans?

When stored properly (vacuumed sealed) they can last for two years. Do not refrigerate or freeze after opening.
